A Look at the Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan is an influential vehicle that garners plenty of praise from fans and critics alike. This success isn't unwarranted either. Having launched in 2008, the Tiguan is undoubtedly an influential part of the Volkswagen lineup as it far precedes the likes of the ID.4, Atlas, Taos, and other Volkswagen SUVs. It's not the oldest vehicle in the Volkswagen lineup by any means, but in regards to the SUV market, the Tiguan is quite influential.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is an SUV carrying some of the best DNA that its manufacturer has to offer, with price, performance, and the Volkswagen signature luxury. The welcomed change the Tiguan brought was vast cargo space compared to the pre-existing models in the lineup. The Tiguan's position in the lineup poses a compact SUV costing less than vehicles such as the Atlas and ID.4 but offering far more than the entry-level Taos SUV, which reached American markets in 2020.

The Tiguan has seen more applied changes than most of the Volkswagen lineup, especially amongst its SUV brethren. The first generation of the Tiguan was lengthy, having ended with the 2015 model, but a mid-generation refresh reached the market five years after its inception. Models released beyond this are a part of the second generation of the beloved SUV, which received its mid-generation refresh in 2020.

An Array of Valuable Features

When the Tiguan first shipped, its mass appeal stemmed from its class—a big deal for the world-renowned German manufacturer when it launched. SUVs were quite prominent when the Tiguan launched, and Volkswagen knew they would need something to stand out from the crowd. One of the ways they accomplished this was by utilizing what the brand had already become so well known for—affordable yet uncompromised luxury. The 2007 and 2008 Tiguan models weren't available in North America, but that changed with the launch of the 2009 Tiguan.

When the 2009 Tiguan launched, the sole powertrain was a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine capable of outputting 200 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. This turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine became quite the familiar sight for the Tiguan since it's in models as recent as the 2023 Tiguan. However, the powertrains placed in the Tiguan models released after the mid-generation refresh in 2018 are not created equally to those that preceded it. For example, the 200 hp in older models is greater than the 184 hp you'd get with a model such as the 2018 Tiguan, but its 206 lb-ft of torque doesn't outmatch the newer model's 221 lb-ft of torque.

Additionally, models developed in 2018 or later pair this turbocharged engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, whereas models released before this used a lesser yet adequate 6-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain shift also brought better fuel economy ratings against the older models. The 2018 Tiguan got an EPA-estimated rating of 22 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway, compared to older models like the 2009 model, which got an EPA-estimated rating of 18 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway.[a]

Tiguan models aren't just powerful and fuel-efficient —they're also spacious. Some pre-owned Tiguan models, such as the 2021 variant, have up to 73.5 cu.ft. of space with the 2-row configuration. The 3-row configuration gives a maximum of 65.7 cu.ft. of space, which means the Tiguan is ready to store cargo for friends and family alike, no matter the distance. With the tremendous fuel efficiency, power, and vast amounts of cargo space, the Tiguan gets extra points for a host of tech features found in many Tiguan models.

While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have been part of the Tiguan since at least 2016, it wasn't until 2018 that they became standard. If you purchase a 2016 or 2017 Tiguan and wish to utilize Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you'll want to opt for a higher-tier trim such as the Wolfsburg. Otherwise, tech features received an overhaul with the mid-generation refresh. Many competing SUVs today offer infotainment tech features that keep you connected while serving as your multimedia hub, so it's not unexpected to see one here. Ultimately, the Tiguan is a fantastic vehicle for any occasion, whether it's vacationing, carpooling, commuting, or anything else.
