First introduced to drivers in 1979, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta represents the eighth generation of this sporty sedan. The automaker’s goal with the Jetta is to deliver a safe and affordable vehicle that is perfect for a first car for the new driver, a reliable ride for commuters, and an economical way to get around for older drivers. In that regard, it has been key for Volkswagen to make sure that the Jetta ticks many boxes, such as delivering high fuel economy, solid performance, exceptional safety, and a roomy interior, while remaining true to a compact and sporty design.

The 2022 Jetta represents an incremental development within the eighth generation, which first hit the road with the 2019 model year. The engine has been upgraded, and a new Sport trim level was introduced to replace the discontinued R-Line trim from the 2021 model year. In addition, more standard features have been added to the base Jetta S model, increasing the value proposition of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta. The Jetta remains a front-wheel drive only vehicle, so there is no need to choose between traction and fuel economy. Volkswagen offers four trims on the 2022 Jetta ranging from the entry-level S to the new Sport, with the SE and SEL representing the top trims.

    The Engine and Transmission

The big news on the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is an all-new powertrain. The prior model featured a 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4, which some drivers complained was underpowered at 147 horsepower. The new engine is a 1.5-liter EA211 turbocharged I-4 gas engine that is capable of 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This comes standard on all four trims of the 2022 Jetta.

Even though it is a larger engine than the one featured on the 2021 Jetta, it is actually more fuel-efficient. This is due to the use of the Miller cycle, which closes the intake valves on the engine early in the induction stroke to reduce fuel consumption. Volkswagen has also given this engine a very high compression ratio of 11.5 to 1. The engine’s turbocharger also features variable turbine geometry to increase efficiency, making the Jetta one of the first production models in North America to offer this technology.

Volkswagen offers drivers a choice of transmissions on the 2022 Jetta. There is a standard six-speed manual transmission that gives drivers excellent control over their vehicle’s engine performance. In addition, Volkswagen offers an available eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic shifting. The automatic transmission on the Jetta features a Stop/Start system to improve fuel economy while reducing engine emissions. When you step on the brake, the system will stop the idling engine and then automatically restart it as soon as you take your foot off the brake pedal.

    Fuel Economy

One of the most impressive things about the 2022 Jetta is its exceptional fuel economy. No matter which transmission you choose on your Jetta, you are going to get great gas mileage. Interestingly enough, the Jetta with the available 8-speed automatic transmission delivers better fuel economy in city driving than the one with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. The Jetta with the 8-speed automatic will give you an EPA-estimated 31 MPG in city driving compared to 29 MPG with the manual.[b] This may be a factor of the Stop/Start technology on the automatic, reducing fuel consumption. Meanwhile, the Jetta with a manual transmission will give you an incredible EPA-estimated 43 MPG on the highway.[b] This is slightly better than the equally impressive EPA-estimated 41 MPG in highway driving provided by the Jetta with the optional 8-speed automatic transmission.[b]

    Handling

All 2022 Volkswagen Jetta models feature front-wheel drive. This will give you solid handling and cornering while having no negative impact on fuel economy. Volkswagen utilizes Modular Transverse Matrix platform architecture on the Jetta. This provides high-strength, hot-formed steel in the body and chassis that can be formed into lighter and thinner parts without reducing structural strength and integrity.

The front suspension on the Jetta features struts with lower control arms, long-travel coil springs, telescopic dampers, and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension is a torsion beam with telescopic dampers. This combination will give you a very comfortable ride for your passengers while providing enough road feel for you to enjoy driving your Jetta. The 2022 Jetta features a tight 105.7-inch wheelbase. This will make parking and cornering easy, with a wonderfully tight 36.7-foot turning circle.

Safety Features to Give You Peace of Mind As You Drive

Volkswagen has made safety more standard than ever on the 2022 Jetta, with an exceptional combination of active and passive safety systems. Each Jetta comes with six airbags strategically positioned throughout the cabin to protect all of the passengers in the event of a collision. If this occurs, the standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System will become engaged. This will bring your Jetta to a safe stop, avoiding any secondary crashes, reducing the chances of additional injury and damage. In addition, the Intelligent Crash Response System will instantly shut off the vehicle’s fuel pump to reduce the possibility of fire or explosion. It will also unlock the car doors and switch on the hazard lights, assisting emergency services to locate your Jetta and provide assistance.

The 2022 Jetta features a number of safety systems that are now standard for all trim levels. Forward Collision Warning will warn you if there is an imminent collision with another vehicle in your path. If you do not promptly respond, the system will engage the Automated Emergency Braking to either bring your Jetta to a safe stop or to reduce the impact of a crash.

Every Jetta now also features Blind Spot Monitoring. When you go to change lanes in your Jetta, two rear-facing radar sensors will scan the traffic in the other lanes and alert you if there is a vehicle in the lane by flashing an LED symbol on your side view mirror. This will operate even if you forget to signal your move, so you can avoid a collision with another vehicle in an adjacent lane.

Volkswagen has equipped every 2022 Jetta with a rearview camera to assist you when backing your Jetta up out of a parking space. To supplement this feature, Volkswagen has added a standard Rear Traffic Alert system. This provides a 180-degree scan of the area behind your Jetta so that when you are in reverse, it will give you an audio-visual alert that another vehicle is about to cross behind you. This will also reduce the chances of a collision. Each of these active and passive features shows the Volkswagen dedication to passenger safety. The goal is to make sure that you and your passengers get wherever you are going safely in your 2022 Jetta.

    Interior Space

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is in the category of compact sedans.
However, when you enter your Jetta, you will be forgiven for thinking you are in a larger luxury car. There is plenty of room for up to 5 passengers to sit comfortably, as the Jetta features 41.1 inches of legroom in the front row and 37.4 inches of legroom in the back, plenty of space to stretch out, even on long drives. The 54 inches of shoulder room and 51 inches of hip room are sure to be appreciated by your rear-seat passengers, especially when you are driving with a full carload of friends or family members. The Jetta also provides a surprisingly spacious trunk, with 14.1-cubic feet of space for your belongings. This can sure come in handy when you are out on a road trip, as that should be enough room for everyone’s luggage.

    Technology You Will Love

Volkswagen has made the 2022 Jetta the most technology-advanced model yet. The Jetta S, Sport, and SE models each come with the Volkswagen MIB2 infotainment system on a 6.5-inch touchscreen. This combines entertainment and connectivity features with critical vehicle information. The MIB2 features a capacitive-touch sensor like on a smartphone or tablet, so you can navigate the features through swiping and pinch-zooming instead of having to use cumbersome controls like on systems from other automakers. The Jetta SEL takes things a step further with the MIB3 infotainment system on an 8.0-inch glass screen display.

Each Jetta features App-Connect allowing you to seamlessly integrate your smartphone into the MIB system through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. The MIB3 on the Jetta SEL allows for this to be done through a wireless connection. There are also 2 USB-C ports and Bluetooth connectivity on all Jetta models, with the Jetta SEL adding wireless charging for your devices.

If you are an audiophile, then you are going to love the SiriusXM with 360L that comes standard on all Jetta models. This is the most advanced audio entertainment platform, with the ability to personalize the content you receive from SiriusXM in your Jetta. The 2022 Jetta SEL also features a 400-watt, 12-channel BeatsAudio system that will easily turn your sedan into a mobile concert hall.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta doesn’t just use technology for entertainment. Each Jetta has an 8-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display that makes driving your car easier than ever. This features two different views and is customizable, so you can decide which vehicle information systems you wish to view at any given time.
