The ID.4 ushered the German automaker into the EV segment and introduced drivers to a new family of vehicles capable of driving past every gas station without a second thought. Today, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle expands on that promise as a more accessible, innovative, and valuable all-electric SUV than you could ever imagine.
This idea of “more” is rooted in the SUV's MEB electric vehicle architecture, making it a purpose-built EV rather than a modified gas-powered alternative. It’s designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, which carries a lot of weight in the burgeoning EV segment. This purpose-built architecture gives the ID.4 a new level of performance and capability, more intuitive design features, and a better overall value. Coincidentally, these characteristics also make it more accessible to the masses, proving an electric vehicle can be affordable despite the high price of many rivals.
Since its debut in 2021, the ID.4 has continuously progressed. The 2023 model packs a heavy punch with more standard technology, an updated design, and high-tech features. Its starting MSRP of $37,495 is enticing, while its three-trim lineup, two battery options, and a choice between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive make finding the best ID.4 an easy task.[a] What more could you ask for in an all-electric SUV? Starting at
In a world where everything is often convoluted and complex, Volkswagen keeps things simple with the 2023 ID.4 lineup. The ID.4 fleet includes the Standard, Pro, S, Pro S, and Pro S Plus trims with rear or all-wheel drive.
The Standard is new for 2023 and makes the ID.4 more accessible to drivers on a budget, with its starting MSRP of $37,495.[a] The Standard comes equipped with the all-new 62-kWh battery that offers an estimated range of 209 miles, the IQ.Drive suite of advanced driver-assist technology, a 12-inch touchscreen navigation system via ID.Light & Discover Pro Max, LED lighting, and wireless smartphone integration and charging.[b] Heated front seats add luxury and comfort, making the Standard one of the best-equipped base models in the segment.
Next in the lineup is the ID.4 Pro, available in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Equipped with the 82-kWh battery, the rear-wheel-drive model offers a 275-mile driving range, while the all-wheel drive model reduces this range to 255 miles but offers exceptional off-the-line acceleration with a launch from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.[b] The AWD Pro also adds a heated windshield and trailer hitch to ensure drivers can make the most of the SUV’s capability.
The ID.4 S balances luxury and convenience, adding a panoramic fixed glass roof, premium LED headlights, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with massage lumbar, leatherette seating, a hands-free power liftgate, and a heated steering wheel. These features carry over to the ID.4 Pro S in both the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models. However, the Pro S Plus takes a different approach and gives the ID.4 a stealthy appearance with its black-painted roof, silver roof rails, and silver accents. Inside, heated rear seats and a three-zone automatic climate control system guarantee everyone’s comfort throughout the cabin.
Volkswagen turned heads with the original Beetle by placing its powertrain at the rear rather than under the front hood. The 2023 ID.4 takes Volkswagen back to its roots, with the MEB architecture moving the SUV’s battery to the rear of the vehicle. This purpose-built platform gives the ID.4 a distinct advantage, making the SUV more agile and stable by enhancing traction and responsiveness. It’s also responsible for the SUV's nearly-silent ride, which forced Volkswagen to generate a synthetic sound to alert pedestrians, cyclists, and others to the ID.4 on the road.
Along with this unique architecture, the ID.4 proves that performance and electric power are no longer mutually exclusive. The ID.4 relies on a permanent magnet synchronous motor that depends on hairpin winding to increase power output, improve cooling, and maximize driving range. The result is phenomenal, especially on the all-wheel drive models that add an asynchronous electric motor to the front axle. This second motor brings the SUV's output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of instant torque, giving the ID.4 immediate acceleration and exceptional responsiveness at any speed.
Harnessing this power is easy whether you opt for the ID.4 with the 62-kWh battery or the larger 82-kWh battery. As expected, the size of the battery impacts the price and range of the ID.4. For example, the all-new 62-kWh battery gives the ID.4 Standard a more affordable starting price and a range of 209 miles.[b] The larger battery pack extends this range to 275 miles on models like the ID.4 Pro S.[b]
Regardless of battery size, Volkswagen makes recharging the ID.4 straightforward and hassle-free. The automaker boasts a charging infrastructure of over 45,000 charging stations nationwide, which includes thousands of DC fast-charging stations you can use at no additional cost during your first three years on the road. With the ID.4 equipped with the Combined Charging System (CSS) socket, you don’t have to worry about compatibility since the setup allows you to use home and public charging stations. Level 2 charging can fully recharge the battery in as little as six hours, while fast-charging stations can add up to 80% battery life in approximately 30 minutes.
Volkswagen is renowned for building sophisticated vehicles that blend luxury with comfort and practicality. The ID.4 continues that tradition in 2023, ushering in new design details across the lineup. From the exterior, these design details give the ID.4 a striking profile enhanced by gloss black highlights, new wheel designs, and LED lighting. Top-tier trims take this lighting even further, adding Premium LED projector headlights complemented by an illuminated Volkswagen logo and connecting lines along the front grille.
Inside, the ID.4 is just as luxurious and combines convenience and comfort with innovation.
